KIT celebrates its centennial in 2010And it so happens that I was there. Okay, I'll admit, by coincidence. The Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) in Amsterdam is an independent centre of knowledge, consisting of a renown museum and theatre. Mum and I actually went there to visit the permanent exhibition 'Rondom India', which proved an excellent choice. A very skilled display and explanation of Indian history, religion, culture and the way these all come together in various forms of art. Even room for the Indian diaspora.
Do check out the story of Shri Ram in the Ramayana. You might also want to immerse yourself in the Mahabharata and find out about how Arjun and his four brothers married Draupadi.
Photo credits: from Wikipedia but probably put there by the Tropenmuseum.
Born (1965) and bred in the Netherlands. Got an MA in English Literature and a BA in Teaching. Began working as a translator for investment company Robeco in Rotterdam. Having made a lifetime hobby out of Lebanon, I made a career switch in 2002 and moved to the capital of Dutch media, Hilversum, to work for the Dutch Muslim Broadcasting Corporation (NMO). After a couple of years I moved on to Dutch daily Dagblad De Pers in Amsterdam where I worked with amongst others Eric Smit and Kustaw Bessems. During these years of journalism I interviewed people like Naseeruddin Shah and Irene Khan (CEO Amnesty). One day I hope to add two of my favourites: Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das. Moving back and forth between journalism and teaching, I finally took a leap of faith and began working as a teacher of English. First at Het Baken, a secondary school in the Dutch city of Almere and presently at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam (University of Applied Sciences).
